| Minutes of Meeting | This week we were pleased to have Dr.S.M. Bandukwala, an eminent Physician & Diabetologist from Mumbai, as our guest speaker. He spoke on “Impact of Covid pandemic on Diabetes patients and related Issues” He explained that the Covid-19 was a new disease, and the medical profession had a difficult time in dealing with this problem, not only because it was highly infective, but that it was often lethal for older patients with co-morbidities like diabetes. We soon learned that Covid 19 affected Diabetics in many ways and it was also bought on due to high steroid use in some patients. It is a special challenge in India, as we have the largest number of Diabetic patients in the world. He explained the precautions that should be taken by diabetic patients and reassured us that the newer strains were more infective but less lethal. Dr Bandukwala made a difficult topic very interesting with his simple and easy conversational style of speaking. Q: Will there be a third wave? Ans: Yes, but it will be less severe in our part of India, and less harmful if we can increase the pace of vaccination. Q: Are Diabetics at a higher risk than others, post vaccination? Ans: No. Q: Is the Post Vaccine reaction related to the efficacy of Vaccine? Ans: No Q: Does the vaccine need to be repeated yearly as booster? Ans: Probably yes. Q: Can one take a different vaccine after a year as booster? Ans: Yes The presentation was greatly appreciated by our members, and the numerous questions were a testimony to the members interest in the topic |
