The Covid-19 Pandemic has unfortunately evolved as a critical and deadly menace all over the world. The geographical spread is rapid and has unfortunately reached Pune, RID 3131 as well where it is growing rapidly. In fact, Maharashtra state and Pune in particular (where RID 3131 is located) have become hot-spots of the said pandemic with large number of cases identified. Hundreds of positive cases are already identified and sadly several patients have succumbed as well. The future situation looks grim and needs action on various counts. The patients are diagnosed late in India as testing facilities are limited. This has resulted in over 20% patients so far becoming critical and needing intensive care. As it is well established, the patient needs respiratory support, hence ventilators are important. Data also shows that senior citizens with other co-morbidities are the most vulnerable. They need to be monitored in ICU set up and hence the treating hospitals need ventilators besides other ICU class medical equipment. Further, as the infection spreads via physical contact and exposure to virus bearing water droplets expelled by infected persons during coughing, sneezing etc., risk of infection transfer is high. The front-line healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, paramedics etc) handling these patients also need personal protection of high order. Frequent testing of suspected cases, confirmed cases and also of the health workers is necessary for proper management and containment of the pandemic. Facilities are proving inadequate to address the rising number of infected patients. This project aims to expand Covid-19 protection, testing and treating capacity by providing ventilators and supporting equipment, as well as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Testing Kits conforming to WHO and Govt of India specifications. We have identified four hospitals in Pune – to be supported in augmenting their Covid-19 treating capacity. These hospitals are: a) Sassoon Hospital which is run by a Govt of Maharashtra and has a long track record of providing affordable healthcare to financially weak patients. b) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cantonment General Hospital, Pune c) Bharti Hospital , a teaching hospital which is run by a charitable trust and has a long track record of providing affordable healthcare. d) Symbiosis University Hospital and research Centre, Pune In short, the objectives of this project are: 1) To expand Covid-19 treatment capacity by installing upto 2 ventilators at Sassoon Hospital. 2) To provide 1,800 Personal Protection Equipment for ensuring healthcare worker’s safety at all the 4 hospitals 3) To provide 1,000 Testing kits for early detection of Covid 19 infection amongst healthcare workers at all 4 hospitals.
