Minutes of Meeting As we celebrated the World Thalassemia day on the 8 th of May, it was appropriate that we have a Guest Speaker who could enlighten us with his experiences of this deadly syndrome, which many of us not aware of. Thalassemia is a deadly syndrome for which there is no cure. Children with Thalassemia can only survive with regular Blood transfusions at an interval of 2-3 weeks, along with expensive medication to chelate the iron that is being deposited in the various organs due to multiple transfusions. Average cost of this supportive treatment is 60-70,000 annually, which very few can afford 10,000 to 12,000 thalassemic children are born annually in India, and very few are optimally managed because of non- availability of blood and the high cost of medicine- both needed for their survival. These births occur, because of a lack of awareness Thalassemia is an inherited syndrome. It happens when either or both parents are CARRIERS of the Trait, which they have passed unknowingly to their children- BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THEIR TRAITS If not detected or treated in time, these children can have a life span of 10-12 years maximum. Dr. Ramanan has started or I would say experimenting with an alternate method of treating these children with a combination of Thalidomide, Hydroxyurea and Wheatgrass. His experience is that given in restricted doses, the thalassemics are able to carry on for long periods of time without blood transfusions. Thereby relieving these children and their parents of the trauma and hardships of transfusing the child every 10-15 days. Long term effects are unknown with the use of these drugs. In some cases, there has been side effects. Dr. Ramanan's take is, every year 10,000-12 000 children are born with Thalassemia and not all get the optimum treatment because of the difficulty is getting blood and the high cost of the other drugs that these children have to take. So if his treatment out numbers the side effects to the ratio of children who are able to live a fairly normal life without blood.. then that itself is a big Win. Some might have reservations with that. But nonetheless it was an interesting and learning experience, more so now that District 3131 will be taking up the Thalassemia Awareness program in the Rotary year 2024-25.
