Vivekanand Hospital is a reputed multi-speciality hospital in Latur offering the best in health care with ultra-modern equipment and an attitude to serve the community, is founded and led by Dr Ashokrao Kukde popularly known as Kukde Kaka. Kukde Kaka is a highly respected personality in Latur who was the chief guest in our previous LN-4 camp in Latur, oraganised by RC Pune Inspira and RC Latur Horizon, held in Feb 2016. The orthopaedic wing of Vivekanand Hospital had registered 42 cases of below elbow amputees in Sept 2017. Shri Anil Gujar ji of Maharashtra Arogya Mandal (MAM) suggested of holding a camp for those patients in Latur, though the number was too low for a camp. MAM are our partners in permanent LN-4 centre at Sane guruji Hospital, Pune. We suggested them to run promotional campaign and the pre-camp registration went upto 92. LN-4 camp was organised by Vivekanand Hospital and Bharat Vikas Parishad in Latur jointly with Maharashtra Arogya Mandal and RC Poona Downtown on April 28, 2018. Our team left for Latur on 27th morning by road and reached Latur in the afternoon. A pre-camp orientation cum training session was conducted for the Latur volunteers. After a powerpoint presentation giving information of the project, a video film regarding fitting of Hand was shown, followed by live demonstration by Amol Zagade, Haresh and Hassan. Immediately after this session, all volunteers joined in making arrangements and set up the venue for the camp next day. The camp was inaugurated by senior Rotarian PDG Vijaybhau Rathi, and Dr Gangadhar Parge, Chief Health Officer, Latur District, was the guest of honour. Rtn Vijaybhau was District Governor of undivided RID 313 and during his tenure our club, under the leadership of Dr Philly Karani, had hosted the first ever RVC workshop in our RVC Sonori. He fondly recalled those memories and affectionately mentioned about our Dr Philly. In a welcome gesture, Commander Kailas Girwalkar of Miragi Netralaya of Latur came with 3 young women from his Eye Hospital staff, who volunteered in our last camp in Latur held on 14 February 2016. They got trained for fitting the hand in that camp and offered to serve again in this camp too. Everyone highly appreciated their attitude to offer service with a silent smile. Camp ended by afternoon with 38 beneficiaries and almost 20 rejections of above elbow and short stump cases. This experience once again proved the importance of pre-camp whatsapp procedure set by our Rtn Anil Chadda, which reduces rejections on the camp day to almost nil.
