We conducted a health checkup for Warkaris coming from Alandi to Pune accompanying the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palanquin. This annual pai-waari or a pilgrimage on foot is a massive movement that has withstood the test of time. It is more than 700 years old. Every year 7-8 lakh devotees walk over 230 km from Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur carrying the paduka or footprints of Saint Dnyaneshwar and Saint Tukaram. The journey takes 15 days to reach its destination. This massive group of people, called Warkaris are divided into well organised individual units that normally consist of around 400-500 people. This is called a ‘dindi’ or group. Two such dindis halt every year at Rtn. Avinash Tarawade’s garage en route to Pandharpur. Each year we conduct a health checkup for the Warkaris at Rtn. Avinash Tarawade's garage. Medicines and health tips are provided to these Warkaris. This year Lions Club donated medicines for distribution to the Warkaris.
