Rotary 3131 - Project Details

11-03-2019 - 20-01-2020

This is a CSR project Anemia is a very common and treatable and often under diagnosed public health problem in India. Anemia is a more common in school going girls and 50% of the school going girls may be anemic in India with Hb levels of less than 120 gms/liter. Anemia can be multifactorial but iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia and is easily treatable. Target Population: Our intervention will focus on girls between 10 – 21 years of age, ~ 50% of whom are estimated to be affected. We will be focusing on those girls who have moderate to severe anemia Intervention Approach: As a pre – intervention base line diagnostic assessment, we will conduct a Hemogram test for the entire set of 3500 girls initially to determine the ones that have severe to moderate anemia. Since the girls are minors, we will have to take explicit parental permission to undertake blood test and subsequent intervention. This may/may not be forthcoming and it is right now difficult to determine how many girls and/or their parents will actually cooperate for blood sample withdrawal. We received the approval during Mar’19 and our planni9ng started immediately after that. Our approach for the project will include activities like - Films on Anemia in Hindi & Marathi to be shown to all participants - Pamphlets etc to be given to all participants - Online quiz to be conducted - Individual counseling to individuals and their Next of Kin identified with severe anemia with referral to secondary/tertiary hospitals - Group counseling to individuals with hemoglobin level less than 100 gm/liter For the 6 months girl will be given necessary medicine like Ferrous Sulphate/Ascorbate and Tab Albendazole. At the end of 6 months, we will conduct a post intervention diagnostic on the group identified as having Iron Deficiency anemia to determine whether or not there has been an improvement in the anemia levels of this group. Basic work on contacting, counseling, awareness has started. Actual vaccination will start in June’19.
