Cervical cancer begins on the cervix, which is the mouth of the uterus. It is the second most common cancer among women in India. Caused by infection with a virus called Human Papilloma Virus or HPV. India has a population of over 435 million women aged 15 years and older who are at risk of developing cervical cancer. India accounts for ~ 1/4th of cervical cancer cases and deaths worldwide, 67,477 annually, i.e., one woman dies of this cancer every 8 minutes. Object of the project: Prevent Cervical Cancer by vaccinating the girl child in the age group 9-14 years. HPV vaccine should be given before girls reach an age when they could indulge in sexual activities, exposing themselves to the risk of HPV infection and consequential risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. Both WHO and IAP recommend the 2-dose regimen (0, 06 month) in 9-14 years old girls. In partnership with other local and international partner club, we are planning to undertake a Vaccination Drive covering approx.1,000 girls in the age group 9-14 from schools in the rural areas of Mulshi and Chakan near Pune city.
