RC Pune University – Great work on NID Day Polio eradication has been a primary goal for Rotary over the past 25 years. This is a worldwide activity, and is seen to be bearing fruit after working tirelessly for decades. In India, Rotary partners with the Government in this activity, providing manpower, materials and funds. RC Pune University takes special pride in being one of the rare clubs whose members go door to door giving Polio vaccine to children. The action is aimed primarily at migrant population working on construction sites. On Sunday 22nd February, the National Immunization Drive (NID) Day, a dozen members of the Club gathered at the residence of PP Vinay Rao, the Polio Eradication Champion of the Club. PP Vinay had arranged to obtain stocks of Polio vaccine from Pune Municipal Corporation, while Rtn. Meeta Rao had arranged an energizing breakfast for the team. First Lady Shobhana had coordinated with Siddhivinayak College to get 3 Rotaracters to join the team. The team split into 3 separate groups, each taking vaccine vials in the cold chain boxes. Each group used a Rotarian’s car driven by the owner, while other members handled the tasks of administering vaccine drops. calling out for families to bring their children to get oral Polio-vaccine drops, marking the children’s fingers, recording the numbers vaccinated etc. They went into hutments, slums and similar areas, and also gave drops to children traveling on the roads with parents. All the three teams were successful in utilizing the entire stock of vaccine made available to them. At the end of the exercise, RCPU members had personally vaccinated 845 children. They could have easily crossed the figure of 1000 had more vaccine been available. In addition RCPU also supported Pune Municipal Corporation by providing packed lunch boxes worth Rs.3700/- for the volunteers who work for the PMC during NID.
