Rotary 3131 - Project Details

01-09-2020 - 05-11-2020

Rotary, along with its partners has reduced Polio cases globally by 99.9%. However, 2 countries in our neighbourhood, Pakistan and Afghanistan never got rid of this disease. Polio is preventable and until we eradicate Polio, every child is at risk. If Polio is not fully eradicated, we could see a global resurgence of the disease with as many as 200.000 new cases each year over the next 10 years, EFFECT of COVID-19: Millions of children have missed their vaccinations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including the vaccine for polio. While a decision is yet to be taken on the use of the vaccine for COVID-19, parents and caregivers must ensure that the backlog of routine vaccinations is cleared. WORLD POLIO DAY is celebrated each year on October 24th. World Polio Day was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. The POLIO Plus District 3131 with the support of District Leaders, Presidents and Clubs organized 2 very successful events commemorating this day. On Saturday, October 24 th 2020, a hour-long virtual program was held where stalwarts from End the Rotary Polio World and Polio Survivors were felicitated. Chief Guests included our own Hon. Rtn Dr. Suresh Jadhav, Executive Director at Serum Institute of India. RCPD was also proud to have our own PDG Dr. Madhav Borate a pioneer in polio reconstructive surgeries recognised for his service to humanity. Among others, the program included two Polio survivors Ms. Savita More and Mr Amol Shingare, both familiar to RCPD. As we get closer to ending polio, we need to increase disease detection, also known as surveillance, to ensure the virus is truly gone from every corner of the world. Given that only one in 200 cases of polio results in paralysis, we rely on the program's extensive surveillance and laboratory network to tell us where polio does (and does not) exist. Therefore, the world need FUNDS for POLIO ERADICATION POLIO FUNDRAISER On Saturday October 31 st 2020, an entertainment Stand-up comedy program BHADIPA was enjoyed by Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike. Rotary club of Poona Downtown was clearly the Star of the Show bagging several awards. Thank you to All our generous RCPD Donors for your support
