Rotary Club of Pune University conducted a unique Science Demonstration program at Hutatma Rajguru School on Saturday, 12th September 2014. A two hour program was arranged at the school where numerous experiments on physics were demonstrated to wide eyed students. The demonstration not only included various applications of sound, magnetism, air pressure, gravity etc. but also explained secrets of some common magic tricks. The demonstrator Mr. Shivaji Mane came from IUCAA, which is not only a centre of excellence in advanced sciences, also devotes lot of efforts in cultivation of science and eradication of superstitions. Starting with demonstrations of drinking straws being converted to sound generators, he went on to show how waves travel in media, how water can be moved using air pressure, how arrows can be shot at great speed and so on. The students, who are familiar with the theories, were glued to their seats, clapping with joy frequently. The demonstrator then showed some ‘magic’ tricks such as joining pieces of string without touching them, making a flexible rope stay straight on one finger etc. But he also showed how those tricks were performed. He explained that there is no such thing as ‘real magic’; all are sleight of hand or tricks of cleverly designed equipments. Such emphatic communication will be important to reduce the influence of superstitions among the students, most of them coming from underprivileged and uneducated families. The demonstration was arranged by Rtn. Meeta Rao who coordinated with IUCAA. Another important part of the day’s program was handing over a set of Laboratory apparatus and equipments procured by the Club with help from AG Sunil Vispute. Contribution of his club, RC Pune Sahwas which has shared 50% of the cost of the materials, is thankfully acknowledged. These materials were formally handed over to the school by PP Abhay Gadgil. The program had active participation of Secretary Sharang Pande, PP Pradip, Directors Satish Mohile, Rekha Patil and Sujata Kulkarni, Rtn. Anjali Hiremath besides First Lady Shobhana and President Dileep Paranjpye.
