Medical Check-up Camp by RC Pune University RC Pune University had established a Rotaract Club at Siddhivinayak College of Arts and Commerce, Kothrud, Pune. This college is part of the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, which owes its origins to the great social reformer Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve. The College caters to girl students, mostly drawn from economically disadvantaged section of society is a well managed and run institution. But the students are often in need for help in different ways. On request from the College, RCPU decided to conduct a series of health check-up camps for the students. The first step was to carry out General Health Check-up. Rtn. Dr. Jyotsna Joshi, in spite of being a specialist, was ever willing to do the work. Knowing that there were over 700 students to be examined, original plan was to conduct the check-ups over two days. But due to various time constraints the work was rescheduled for a single day, 23rd September 2014. Keeping in mind the huge volume of work, club members overwhelmingly volunteered to help. PP Pradip Patil, PP Rekha, First Lady Shobhana Paranjpye, Service Projects Director Satish Mohile and Rohini Mohile worked at the camp from start at 9am till end of the day. They recorded data, helped students to fill forms, controlled the crowd of hundreds of excited students and also measured heights, weights and BP. They were ably supported by IPP Ravi Kulkarni and Sujata, PP Kshama Gangoli, Bapusaheb and Vaishaliraje Shitole, Kumudini Chaudhari, Priyanka Karnik, Meeta Rao, as well as two Nursing students deputed from TMV by President Dileep. Star of the day was undoubtedly Dr. Jyotsna Joshi who single-handedly examined the students, working without tirelessly throughout the day. The massive amount of work can be judged by the fact that she personally examined an incredible 612 students in the course of the day!! The next phase of medical check-up was conduced on 29th and 30th September. On these two days, the leading role was with Rtn. Dr. Supriya Kheur who conducted dental and hemoglobin check-up of the students. In addition, a team of ophthalmologists deputed by Rtn. Dr. Shreekant Kelkar conducted eye testing of the students. Besides the doctors from RCPU, Rtns. Nana, Rekha, Shobhana, Shruti, Kumudini, Ajit, Deepa and Sujata also helped to the best of their abilities. Their efforts were most rewarding. In spite of these being time consuming tests, the teams were able to do eye check up of over 500 students, dental check for 210 students and hemoglobin checking of 135 students. Health check-ups carried out in the three days will be followed by counseling by doctors when students return after their Diwali holidays. Results of the tests showed that some students have significant anaemia, heart problems etc. All students are in the young age group and some are from economically weak sections of the society. As a result, they tend to not realize the severity of the medical conditions or choose to ignore them. However, lack of proper attentions and continued neglect can result in very serious problems for the affected person in future. One important step in avoiding such an eventuality, is to provide proper guidance and counseling. Keeping this in mind, First Lady Shobhana Paranjpye and Director – Medical Services Dr. Jyotsna Joshi took steps to arrange a counseling session for the affected students. Coordinating with the College authorities, a date was fixed and both the Rotarians spent several hours with the students on 5th December 2015. Dr. Jyotsna explained the medical conditions, their effects, long term consequences and treatments.
