Rotary Club of Pune University – Happy School Project RCPU has focused strongly on Rotary’s TEACH mission. Happy School being one of the elements of TEACH, the club has directed its energies to helping schools in need. One such school is Palkar Abhijat School, run by a voluntary organization that does not get any support from the government. Having established an Interact Club here, RCPU assessed its various needs, and was told by the school authorities that poor condition of their toilets had become a major issue for them. The school which has over 500 students from primary level to high school, functions in a 3 storied building. Construction of another story has been approved by the Municipality and when constructed, will require a lift. Toilets which are used by the 500 or more children had become very dilapidated and their doors, floors, walls etc. were crumbling. This was resulting in repeated choke-ups, foul smell and other nuisance. When RCPU asked the schools about their priorities, the instant response was that the toilets needed renovation. Renovation or reconstruction work involved various problems including the need to relocate some of them to accommodate a lift which would come up when an additional floor was added to the building. After extensive discussion, the extent and nature of work was finalized, RCPU arranged contractor for the job. Club Service Project Director Satish Mohile examined his quotation and after concluding that the rates were competitive, a contract was given. The contractor completed the task exactly as desired by the school. In all, 6 toilets were renovated and now they can be seen to have new doors, new door frames, adequate protection for water over-run, convenient spacing and newly retiled floors. On completion of the work, the school gave a letter to RCPU expressing their happiness with the work. This Project has been completed in December 2014, and RCPU is pleased that we have been able to help a low income school to be a happier and cleaner place for its students.
