On 13 January 2021, our Eye and Organ Donation team of Rtn Pradeep Munot along with Rtns Jitu Mehta, Shabbir Jamnagarwala, Spouse Ullhas Bhosale and Rtn President Surrender Gupta, (RCP Cantonment, a new entrant to join the team), conducted a virtual program for Inner Wheel Clubs of Poona Downtown, Pune Riverside, Pimpri and Imperial. Rtn Spouse Ullhas Bhosale began the presentation by giving a brief introduction about Rotary Club of Poona Downtown, the team and its efforts in spreading awareness about eye and organ donation over the years. Rtn Jeetu Mehta concentrated on the need for eye donation giving real life examples of how it benefited the recipients. Rtn Pradeep Munot (Predeepbhai as we all fondly address him) then gave a stimulating talk on the need for both Eye and Organ donation and how to go about it. He talked of how many lives could be saved by timely harvesting organs from a brain-dead person. He appealed to those present to spread the message by word of mouth to as many people as they can. He explained that there is a very big gap between the number of doners and people who require the eyes as well as organs. And it is imperative that we narrow the gap. Though it is a sensitive issue, if people are made aware, many would come forward to donate organs of their kin after death. There can be no greater gift than giving hope to the handicapped and giving a new lease of life to the seriously ill. We were fortunate to have in our midst Shreya Siddanagowder, recipient of Asia’s first inter-gender hand transplant. Due to her grit and perseverance, she is now able to perform all tasks with her transplanted hand. Her story left the audience awestruck. Pradeepbhai also showed a clip about Neemuch, a small town in MP, which through the efforts of volunteers has the proud distinction of being a 100 percent eye donating city. The participants had a number of questions which were ably and patiently answered by the team. Many wanted to know how to register as organ donors, whom to call in case of a death, what they could do for eye donation, which organs could be donated. Finally, everyone pledged to donate their organs and spread awareness amongst their friends and family for this worthy cause. The message was clear - “Be an Organ Donor – All it costs is a little Love”.
