In India, osteoporosis is a major public health problem. However, in the absence of any robust regional guidelines, the screening, treatment, and follow-up of patients with osteoporosis are lagging behind in the country. Identifying the need, Rotary Club of Panvel Elite organized a Mega Camp for Osteoporosis Detection and it's Awareness amidst the community. This project was led by Dr. Pushkar Likhite and Rtn. Dr. Mangesh Dake at Likhite Orthopaedic & Paediatric Super Speciality Clinic, Panvel. The patients were checked for their bone mineral density (BMD). A BMD test measures your bone mineral density and compares it to that of an established norm or standard to give you a score. The score that you receive from your bone density (BMD or DXA) test is called as T-Score and is measured as a standard deviation from the mean. The score greater than (-1) indicate that your BMD result is Normal. The score in the range (-1 to -2.5) indicate low bone density which is termed as Osteopenia, An early stage to Osteoporosis. The score lesser than (-2.5) indicate Osteoporosis (porous bones that can lead to easy fractures) The Patients were then given consultation by our Expert Doctors, Dr. Pushkar Likhite and Rtn. Dr. Mangesh Dake based on their scores. After consultation, Rtn. Dr. Swati Likhite along with Miss Neelam waghmare gave an awareness talk on What is Osteoporosis? What are the causes? What is the diet and nutrition that should be followed if osteoporosis is detected as well as to avoid further deterioration of the bone density? A total of 1000 patients attended the camp and were satisfied with the consultation & thanked the efforts of our club for creating awareness about Osteoporosis and what care should be taken. We plan to continue to organize such camp every 3 months.
