The surgeries will be carried out at The Poona Blind Men Association's H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune which is already engaged in carrying out ‘free of cost’ and subsidized cataract surgeries, particularly of poor and needy patients. The hospital has a lot of experience in eye care, having performed around 0.75 million surgeries since its founding in the year 2000. They have experienced doctors and all the necessary equipment to conduct the surgeries. They also conduct in-house training programs of doctors in the hospital. The hospital will conduct the cataract surgeries at a fixed price of Rs.3,000 per surgery which has been negotiated with them. This charge includes pre-operative test, post-operative care, medicines, spectacles and follow up visits. It also covers the cost of to & fro transportation of the patient from their village to the hospital, accomodation and food for the patients. The entire cost will be funded from this grant donation. The beneficiaries do not have to pay for the treatment. • In coordination with the PHCs and local administration, the hospital conducts regular eye check-up camps. Cataract patients are identified and brought to Pune by hospital owned fleet of buses. • In the evening on the day of arrival (Day-1), the patients undergo a basic medical test and another eye check-up to confirm the findings of the camp. Food and accommodation is provided in the hospital dormitories (gender segregated). • Cataract removal and IOL implant procedure is carried out in the morning of Day-2. In the evening, post-operative check-up is performed. Patients are given appropriate eyedrops, medications, appropriate glasses and eye-care instructions (oral & written in local language). Patients are asked to rest in the dormitory after food. • On Day-3, a final check-up is performed, eye-care instructions are repeated and the patients are transported back to their respective villages. • One month and six months after the surgery, the patients undergo follow-up checks in the medical camps near their village. Cases of post-surgery complications if any are referred back to the hospital for further investigation and appropriate treatment. The hospital has the capacity to perform upto 150 cataract surgeries per day on a 6-day/week basis. The monthly capacity is 3,600 to 4,000 cataract surgeries. The proposed number of surgeries will be performed in approx. 2.5 months.
