'Considering the water scarcity in the entire Raigad district and increase the availability of water for agricultural purposes RC Patalganga in association with Panvel & Khalapur Taluka Agriculture Department and Village Grampanchayat initiated construction of “Check Dams”on water streams, drains etc A check dam (also called gully plug) is a small, temporary or permanent dam constructed across a drainage ditch, swale, or channel to reduce the speed of the flowing water. In addition to increasing the storage capacity which can be used for agricultural purposes, The reduced speed of water also gives enough time for water to infiltrate or percolate into the ground, thus increasing the ground water level in that particular area. With help from Agricultural department, We identified total 168 spots for Vanrai Bandhare ( Check Dams) in Panvel & Khalapur taluka. 10000 empty cement bags were arranged from construction site and transported to identified locations. With help of villagers and students through Shramdaan program, we go the bags filled with sand and soil and constructed the Check dams under the guidance of Agricultural department. Total area of storage was nearly 22 hectares and water stored by check dam was nearly 340.4 TCM. The tribal farmers used to face shortage of water during summer season and could not grow crops which was their livelihood. This abundant water accumulated in the check dams, till the month of May, which was used by them to plant vegetables and pulses in the Rabi season. Also the wild and domestic animals also used this water for drinking.
