The three successive waves of COVID-19 have underscored the deficiencies in rural health infrastructure in India, particularly in Maharashtra and other states. In response to these challenges, we conducted an extensive Community Needs Assessment Survey and identified five Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in Nere, Nasarapur, Bhongivali, Ambavade, and Jogavadi, along with the Sub District Hospital Bhor, to address the critical needs of a population of 200,000. These locations, situated approximately 60 km from Pune city. Under GG 2122211 and GG 223842, these centers have received support for equipment, medical supplies, instruments, and some infrastructure facilities for WASH. The initiative has significantly improved the healthcare landscape, allowing rural residents to focus on "getting better" rather than struggling with appointments. The enhanced capacity of various PHCs and the Sub District Hospital at Bhor has facilitated better access to quality healthcare, emphasizing early treatment and effective management of chronic conditions. This positive impact is evident in the statistics provided by the Health Department. In the upcoming Third Phase of Upgradation, our plan includes supporting 2 primary centers, 14 Sub Centers, and a Sub District Hospital. These facilities require assistance with equipment, medical supplies, instruments, and infrastructure facilities for WASH. Background: Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) are state-owned rural healthcare facilities in India, serving as single-physician clinics with minor surgery capabilities. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), PHCs are established to cover specific population norms, with Sub-Centers designated for every 5000 people in regular areas and every 3000 people in hilly/tribal/desert areas. All these healthcare facilities are constructed by Zilla Parishad, Government of Maharashtra. Each sub center and PHC has qualified staff, including a Medical Officer, Para Medical, and supporting personnel, while the Sub District Hospital in Bhor boasts a capacity of 50 Beds with 2 Medical Officers, including a Gynecologist, 15 Nursing staff, and 15 health workers. The Taluka Health Officer, Panchayat Samiti, Bhor, oversees the operation and maintenance of the donated equipment. Rotary Goals: This project aligns with Rotary's Area Of Focus-DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT, addressing specific goals such as providing equipment for remote populations, improving local healthcare professionals' capacity, promoting disease prevention and treatment programs, and strengthening healthcare systems. Objective: The overarching goal is to ensure quality-oriented and community-sensitive healthcare for all. The Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) for PHCs aim to provide comprehensive primary healthcare, maintain acceptable standards of care, and make services responsive to community needs. Services provided at PHC and Sub Centers include Outpatient Department Services, 24-hour emergency services, referral services, and in-patient services. Solution & Strengths of the Project: Strengthening primary healthcare is crucial for achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals. A robust infrastructure can help control the spread of diseases, promote sanitation practices, and encourage family planning. Shifting focus from a hospital-centered model to a strengthened primary healthcare system is essential. This requires training for medical practitioners and the provision of basic, high-quality equipment at PHCs for primary diagnoses. Beneficiaries: The local residents of 17 villages in Bhor Taluka, Dist. - PUNE, including Shivare, Nasarapur, Shind, Pasure, Degaon, Kapurhol, Jambhali, Harnas, Alande, Hatave Budruk, Kikavi, Nhavi, Sarola, Apati, Shiravali HM, Hirdoshi, and Sub District Hospital, Bhor, will be the primary beneficiaries of this initiative.
