The city of Pune, with a population of approximately 6.8 million, includes 1.2 million residents living in 477 economically disadvantaged communities classified below the poverty line (BPL). Pune boasts accessible healthcare services across private, government, and charitable hospitals. However, BPL individuals often face financial constraints, preferring free treatments available in government hospitals despite longer wait times, particularly critical for ophthalmic care. Charitable hospitals, subsidized or free for the poorest, also play a pivotal role. This initiative aims to enhance and expand ophthalmic care at a prominent charitable hospital, specifically targeting BPL patients. The project's focal point is the Seth Tarachand Ramnath Charitable Hospital, enhancing its existing ophthalmic unit by modernizing critical equipment. By improving capacity, the project seeks to mitigate long wait times and ensure affordable, accessible eye care for economically disadvantaged families, a substantial portion of Pune's populace. Beyond immediate treatment, the initiative embraces a proactive strategy: reducing the demand for intensive eye care by preventing conditions that necessitate surgical intervention. This preventive approach emphasizes community education and awareness among BPL populations. A key component involves partnering with the NGO Niramay to train hundreds of Anganwadi Workers (community health workers) in eye health education. Through a Train-the-Trainer model, these workers will disseminate knowledge on eye care practices and healthy lifestyles within their communities, potentially curbing the incidence of avoidable eye conditions. By empowering local health workers and fostering awareness, the project aims not only to alleviate immediate healthcare burdens but also to instill sustainable health practices. Ultimately, this multifaceted approach strives for healthier eyes and improved quality of life among Pune's economically vulnerable communities, addressing both immediate healthcare needs and long-term public health goals.
