On August 20, 2024, Rotary Club of Chinchwad organized a Rakshabandhan celebration at the Paraplegic Home in Khadki. This event marked a new initiative by the club to honour and celebrate Rakshabandhan with soldiers who are residents of the home. The event was attended by Rotary members, Ann’s, Rotary Community Cops, and Rotaract members, totalling 30 participants. Event Schedule and Activities: The team arrived at 10:00 AM to a warm reception at the Paraplegic Home. The facility houses 63 soldiers, many of whom are injured in war and are either partially or fully paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries. The event began with a traditional Aarti, followed by the tying of Rakhi on the soldiers. The ceremony was filled with joy and reverence, symbolizing solidarity and respect. After the Rakhi ceremony, the participants enjoyed sweets with the soldiers and engaged in conversations. The soldiers, though physically challenged, displayed remarkable spirits and actively participated in daily activities. Insight into the Paraplegic Home: Dr. Col. Mukarjee, the Director of the Paraplegic Home, provided an insightful overview of the facility. He showed a documentary illustrating the operations, fund generation, and construction of the home, highlighting the extensive efforts involved in supporting the soldiers. Dr. Mukarjee explained the various activities and programs available to the residents. The home not only provides medical care but also engages the soldiers in various activities to enhance their quality of life. Remarkable Achievements: Some of the soldiers are Olympic gold medallists in swimming, archery, table tennis, and basketball. Notably, the Captain and Vice-Captain of the National Basketball Team hail from the Paraplegic Home. The soldiers’ artistic skills were also impressive. Several paintings created by the residents, including those who paint using their mouths, were displayed. Their ability to excel in various fields despite their physical limitations is truly inspiring. The visit was a profound experience, highlighting the resilience and strength of the soldiers. The contrast between our everyday concerns and the remarkable lives led by these soldiers was striking. Their high morale and accomplishments serve as powerful examples of perseverance and courage. The Rakshabandhan celebration at the Paraplegic Home was not only a gesture of appreciation but also a deeply enriching experience for all involved. It underscored the importance of honouring our heroes and recognizing their contributions and sacrifices. The soldiers’ achievements and their approach to life provided invaluable lessons in strength and determination.
