Rotary 3131 - Project Details

01-11-2009 - 01-11-2009

Last years rotary international thrust area was to prevent infant mortality. In tune with the last years thrust area, our then President Dr Rajendra Gosavi prepared a project on developing a state of the art Neonatal intensive care unit at Tarachand Hospital. The project was planned in 3 stages. In the first year we donated 2 incubators, 2 Double sided phototherapy, multi Para monitors, weighing machines & Resuscitation kits. In the second phase we had planned to donate One Neonatal Ventilator, Two warmers, Two Double sided Phototherapy, & Resuscitation kits. This second phase donation equipments were handed over to the hospital on 1st of November at the hands of RIPN kalian Banerjee. In the third phase we will be donating them the High Frequency oscillatory Ventilator, Two more warmers & One Ambulance with Transport Incubator. The infant mortality rate is the highest in India. Even Bangladesh & Sri lanka have lower mortality rate as compared to India One baby dies every 5 seconds, 5 lac babies dies in the first 24 hours after birth, 20 lac babies dies before they can see their first birthday. Only One Percent of the GDP is spent on health care in India. There are various reasons for the higher Mortality rates, but one of the major reason is lack of life saving devices like Incubators, Resuscitators, Mucas Suckers, Infant Ventilator, & High Frequency Oscillators. Most of the ventilators (80 to 90%) are imported from USA or from Germany. The cost ranges from 8 to 14 lacs, hence its impossible for the poor children’s to avail this facility when needed. To circumvent this problem, we donated Neonatal ventilator to Tarachand Hospital who provide services to poor people. The charges of Tarachend Hospital are very negligible. The ventilator is an Electro mechanical device that provides artificial ventilation to babies who can not breathe on their own. It provides various breathing patterns to suit different diseases. If the baby does not breathe it provides mandatory breathes, if the baby tries to take a breathe on her own, the machine has a sensing mechanism that senses the patients effort & provide a assisted breathe, if the baby stops breathing, it senses & provides a mandatory breathe so on & so forth. Ventilator is a machine that pushes the air & oxygen mixture in the baby’s lung at a preselected pressure, in a preselected time, & allows the baby a specific period for exhalation. The Air Oxygen mixture that is pushed in Baby’s lung is pre warmed at body temperature & is humidified so that dry gases do not cause harm to the infant’s lungs. It incorporates various safety parameters & alarms to ensure Patients safety.
