Downtown is synonymous with Perfection with a capital ‘P’ and as usual our much coveted event of the year, the International Nite passed off with clockwork precision, enjoyment, joie de vivre, maximum participation of members and a perfect melange of the youth with age. It was indeed an evening of fun, frolic good humour and camaraderie. The cultural program started with the Ganesh Vandana, an Invocation to Lord Ganesh. This dance was performed by the differently abled girls of the NGO ‘Help Life’. They performed a beautiful dance sequence and received a loud round of applause for the tremendous efforts they had put in. Then came our piece de resistance! The dances of India showcasing the cultural diversity of our country performed by our Anns and some Rotarians. What a lot of discussion, debate , effort and enthusiasm and I believe minimum practise went into these dance sequences, and in the process the participants had a lot of fun meetings, which of course included eating and keeping ones spirits high as far as possible! The Punjab folk song was the remix of the traditional and the modern, and was vigorous and energetic. Then came the graceful Kathak and the dance from Bengal, based on the song Dhitang Dhitang Bole, was soft and equally graceful. Then came the Parsi garba complete with the blushing bride and handsome groom who were actually celebrating their wedding anniversary. And last came the colourful Koli dance, with their seductive and energetic dance movements celebrating their fishing activities and traditions. There were individual performances by our Downtowners and family – Shravani sang beautifully, Avinash and Andrew performed a Bollywood number, Young Kashish gave a dance performance and Rajender Nahar and friends sang an old Hindi number. The most heartening performance was that of Promil and Surinder doing the Cha Cha Cha. Our RIE students’ performance was indeed laudable, they were dressed colourfully and did the Maharashtrian Lavni dance with aplomb! And they also performed a Bollywood fusion dance, and got thunderous applause. Their self-introduction in the local lingo was indeed endearing. The most awaited item of the evening – the Fashion Show / Fancy Dress parade by our very own Rotarians, pompously strutting the Red Carpet, seemed thoroughly to enjoy the moment of childhood dreams of glory!! There was an enthusiastic youth brigade behind all this planning, practising, programming lead by an ultra-enthusiastic Ann Pritee Gupta. She was truly in her elements, and she made everyone dance to her tune, and everyone did so willingly, even she got around her husband Rajesh to do the Red Carpet walk!! Neeru has a terrific stage presence, and compered the show with elan! Pinky, Surinder, and Promil all those on the committee thank you for organizing a fantastic evening. All in all it was an evening of Fun showcasing India in its cultural diversity, and celebrating the exuberant and enthusiastic spirit of Downtown!
