01-07-2023 - 24-03-2024

Rejuvenation project of Warje Nalla, which is important for the residents and environment of Pune, is nearing completion. This project was sponsored by Rotary Club of Pune Sinhagad Road. For this, C.S.R. funds were received from 'Netcracker Technology Solutions (Inc), Pune' company. For this, Lemnian Green Solutions, Pune did the design, planning and actual work. Through this project, the waste water flowing in the drain was cleaned for use. It flows clean enough for fleshy life to survive. Along with sewage treatment, efforts have been made to increase the beauty and biodiversity of the area. All this has been done without energy, without construction, without chemicals and very little manpower for maintenance. For raising financial support for this, Mr.Abhijit Patil from Netcracker Technology Solutions, Rtn. Deepak Mahajan (CSR Director, Rotary District.3131) has played a major role in project conception and implementation. Rtn.Satish Khade acted as the project head. Old Condition of Nalah : In the past, the condition of Warje Nalla was bad. Dumping of solid waste in drains, retained silt and sewage accumulated in the drains were causing foul odors. During the rainy season there was a possibility of flooding and the breeding of mosquitoes was high. Therefore, this drain was adversely affecting the health of the residents of the area. Because of the dirt, pigs and other animals started to roam. Project Activities: In this project, ecological revival of two parts of the drain has been carried out. It was divided into 2 parts to make the drain work easier. The first section is about 350 m long and averages 6-8 m wide, starting outside the BAIF campus and running eastward through the residential area. The second part is below the bridge and is about 1200 sq. is of meter. • The silt was removed and used for stream bank stabilization • A variety of indigenous trees were planted along the banks • Construction of stone structures to improve the flow of water and to purify the water to some extent • Special natural systems were built to increase dissolved oxygen in water. New birds, butterflies, chatur, bees and fish are now appearing here • Used plants (Phyto-remediation) to clean the waste water Post-implementation improvements: Due to this project, the quality of drain water has improved enough to sustain life. Bunch of fishes, King Fisher & ducks were also observed at some times. Also, the beauty of the area has been enhanced by planting trees around the drain. This has reduced the mosquito nuisance and the possibility of flooding. Ongoing work: Floating waste in drains is still a challenge. This waste is being removed regularly. Also, the installation of nets to collect floating garbage was stalled due to opposition from citizens. But now two nets have been installed. Henceforth, the waste coming will get stuck in these nets and the Pune Municipal Corporation vehicle will be able to collect the waste from there. Team Lemonion Green Solutions took measures to raise public awareness through capacity building programmes. Beautification work by painting the retaining walls. Also, a bamboo gate will be installed to ensure that residents do not throw garbage near the drain. Initially, Rtn. Satish Khade gave information about this project. Later, Pooja Tendulkar of Lemnian Green Solutions made a detailed presentation and informed about the project progress, hurdles & challenges in the project from the beginning. Special guest for this event was DGN.Rtn.Santosh Marathe, Environment Director District 3131, Rtn. Rejendrakumar Saraf (Env.Engineer & Dist.Env. Co-Director), Rtn. Santosh Pardeshi (Dist. Env.Director) and many other Rotarians were present. Finally, the secretary Abhay Devare gave vote of thanks, before actual site visit of the project.
